“Opera, Amore,” a one-act meta-opera by Federico Gon with a libretto by Alberto Mattioli, is a chamber opera based on the very history of melodrama. This original production reimagines some of the most beautiful arias from the great Italian operatic tradition in a delightfully revitalized dramaturgical setting. At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the brilliant artists of the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino reinterpret the finest of the Italian operatic repertoire, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, creating a surprising and moving performance. The Johannesburg performance, following stops in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, concludes the African tour of “Opera, Amore.” It is an extraordinary opportunity to appreciate the masterpieces of composers such as Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini, among others, performed by the voices of the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, one of Italy’s most prestigious musical institutions.
