The winner is Niccolò Benetton (The Cool Couple)

The Johannesburg Prize, which saw the candidacy of many emerging and well-known Italian artists, closed for applications on 22 May. The jury, composed by Fabio Troisi (Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria), Carolina Italiano (Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) and Benji Liebmann (The Nirox Foundation), selected Niccolò Benetton, part of the duo The Cool Couple, whose research focuses on the friction points generated daily in the relationship between people and images.
Benetton will be in Johannesburg from September to November 2019, where he will have the opportunity to interact with the local cultural environment while continuing with his artistic research.

Within the framework of the cultural program "Italy, Culture, Africa", the Directorate General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Periphery of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC), the Country System Department of the MAECI and the Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria launch the “Johannesburg Prize", a program of artistic residency for Italian artists. The winner of the "Johannesburg Prize" will be offered the opportunity to spend a period of three months (September- November 2019) in Johannesburg with the aim of developing their creative skills in contact with the South African cultural and artistic environment.
