Italian citizenship application exam

Law no. 132 – December 1, 2018, came into effect On December 4, 2018

According to this law, those meeting the requirements to apply for Italian citizenship must provide a B1 (or higher) certificate to prove their knowledge of the Italian language through:

– a diploma awarded by a public or equivalent educational institution, or

– a certificate issued by a recognized certifying body.

Currently, the certifying bodies recognized and belonging to the CLIQ unified certification system (Italian Language Quality Certification), are:

– the University for Foreigners of Siena

– the University for Foreigners of Perugia

– the Roma Tre University

– The Dante Alighieri Society.

To obtain this certificate in South Africa and for assistance in learning Italian you can contact the Dante Alighieri Society Committees in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg, or contact this Institute.

Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language 

The above mentioned certificates serve to prove your communication skills in Italian as a Foreign Language. Potential recipients include foreign citizens, Italian citizens residing abroad (of Italian origin), and foreign immigrants in Italy.

No previous degree is required to take the exams.

The Italian Cultural Institute is credited by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to administer the above-mentioned certificate through the following institutions:

Università per Stranieri di Perugia (CELI – CIC)

Università per Stranieri di Siena  (CILS)

Università degli Studi Roma Tre  (IT – ele.IT)

Società Dante Alighieri (PLIDA)

The certifications are consistent with the parameters set by the European Union’s Framework of Reference for Languages.
