To mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria, in partnership with the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre and the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, presents screenings of the Italian film for children The last time we were children. These commemorative events aim to honour the memory of the Holocaust while exploring themes of resilience, friendship, and hope through storytelling. The screenings express the urgent need to find appropriate language to raise awareness of the memory of the Shoa among young people. They will take place on the 5th and 9th of February 2025.
Directed by Claudio Bisio (2023), The last time we were children is set in the summer of 1943 during World War II and follows four young friends, Italo, Cosimo, Vanda, and Riccardo, united by a bond of loyalty and innocence. Their world is upended when Riccardo, their Jewish friend, is deported by the Nazis. Determined to save him, the remaining trio embarks on a dangerous journey across a war-torn Italy, confronting the harsh realities of the conflict. The film weaves themes of friendship, courage, and the loss of innocence in a gripping tale of resilience and hope.
