ITALIAN FESTIVAL AT IDIOM WINES

Idiomwines1

The Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria, in collaboration with the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town, is proud to announce the participation of the renowned Flag-wavers Association of Arezzo at the Italian festival at Idiom Wines in Cape Town (March 2-3), an annual event organized by IDIOM WINES that promotes and celebrates Italian traditions. At the Italian festival at Idiom Wines, South Africa and Italy manage to meet through a rich program of Italian wine-tasting, street food, cooking masterclasses, musical events, and entertainment for every age.

Flag-wavers used to serve as a pivotal figure in medieval military strategies. Thanks to a precise code of throwing and waving banners, they were able to communicate to their allies information about the most propitious moment for attack, the movements to be made with troops, and updating about the salient phases of battle. As time went on, their role took on more and more artistic depth, becoming a fully-fledged part of local folklore and popular entertainment.

Created in 1960, he Flag-wavers Association of Arezzo is an independent organization whose primary aim is to revive the art of “flag-handling” in its most complete form, preserving the original military spirit but also trying to enhance its aesthetic and choreographic aspect.  Today the group is made up of more than 60 flag-wavers and over 20 among drums and clarions and has spread their fame with over 1.700 performances in the most important squares around the world.

Thanks to the combined effort of Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria and Idiom Wines, the Flag-wavers have been invited to the Italian festival at Idiom Wines in Cape Town on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 March. During these two days, they will perform multiple times and they will interact with the public giving away demonstrations and historical details about their long-standing tradition.

The venue of the festival is at Idiom Wines (Da Capo Vineyards, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Somerset West).
