Italian Movie Day Comes to Johannesburg: A Celebration of Contemporary Italian Cinema

The Italian Cultural Institute is delighted to invite Johannesburg and all Gauteng audiences to a special day dedicated to contemporary Italian cinema. On 13 September 2026, the historic Bioscope Independent Cinema will host Italian Movie Day, an immersive cinematic experience showcasing three acclaimed Italian films, each offering a unique perspective on contemporary storytelling.

Set in one of Johannesburg’s most cherished independent cinemas, the event forms part of “Fare Cinema”, an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation that promotes the richness and diversity of Italian filmmaking around the world.

Three Films, Three Journeys

Antartica – Quasi una fiaba
Directed by Lucia Calamaro

Set on a remote Antarctic research base, this thought-provoking film follows a visionary mission commander and the arrival of a rebellious scientist whose presence challenges the status quo. A compelling exploration of power, ambition, and humanity’s future.

A solitary caretaker spends his days looking after a decaying villa, disconnected from those around him. When a group of students unexpectedly enters his life, one particular encounter begins to transform his outlook in ways he never anticipated.
