Maestro – poster Joburg

The Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in South Africa, the Consulate General of Italy in Johannesburg and the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town invites you for a selection of film screenings in order to commemorate the Remembrance Day. The event is the product of the annual collaboration between the Institute and the Holocaust & Genocide Centres of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

La Finestra di Fronte, by director Ferzan Özpetek and starring actors Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Raoul Bova, Filippo Nigro and Massimo Girotti, will be screened as follows:

  • Sunday 4 Feb, h18:00 – Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, 88 Hatfiled St, Gradens, Cape Town. Booking: 021 462.5553 or
  • Tuesday 13 Feb, h17:30 – Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre, 44 KE Masinga Rd, North Beach, Durban. Booking: 031 368.6833 or

The story revolves around a couple in crisis who happens to meet with an old amnesiac man. The man, who goes by the name Simone, is a survivor to double persecution, being both a Jew and a homosexual. The protagonists’ attempt to retrace his story leads them to reflect on themselves and their lives as well. The Shoah is thus recounted through the eyes of two unwitting observers and the ones of an elderly and lonely man, who now carries the burden to remember in order to make sure that no one else forgets.

You are also invited for the screening of the docu-film Maestro by director Alexandre Valenti. Making use of an extremely evocative footage, Valenti manages to retrace the memory of a number of musicians who felt victims to the Shoah. He collected, restored and brought back to life their melodies – sometimes just scribbled on toilet paper – before they vanish within the silence of history.

The screening will take place on:

  • Sunday 11 Feb, h.15:00 and it will be preceded by a cocktail at 14:30 Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, 1 Duncombe Rd, Forest Town, Johannesburg. Booking:

Please note that subscription for the concerts, although free of charge, is compulsory.
